DIGITAL VS FILM

The debate continues to rage about whether film still has a place in travel photography with the advent of the digital camera. I’d argue definitely so, with the skill of a travel photographer knowing when to use it. There are times when digital cameras are vastly superior (ie for their convenience, speed and ability to capture a subject in ambient light), however, there are also times – such as shooting ariels –  when the quality of film speaks for itself. I’m just back from Vanuatu where I’ve been commissioned to photograph Erakor Island Resort which I shot both digitally and on film (below). Yes, it was cumbersome carrying two cameras in the chopper. Yes, it was a hassle getting the film through customs. Yes, it was more expensive to shoot it in film. But my clients pay me to produce superior images and, in my opinion,  the color, the clarity, the depth and the sharpness of film – certainly in this instance – remains unrivaled. What say you?

I think you’re right mate ….film seems to offer more definition and clarity but digital is so much handier and you can try stuff out and see an instant result ..I think (and as you know …I’m no expert) it comes down to technique and digital photo manipulation ….if your sensor is good and you’re shooting raw …and if your post processing is good then you can achieve a really good result …you have to know the limitations of your digital camera and then take that in to account when you’re in Lightroom or Photoshop …..another major factor for you my friend would be the security of your images and the ability to back stuff up or even upload files digitally from the field …the answer at the end of the day is probably take both but you may need to spend a little more time in the gym building those skinny arms up …take care mate

I have both but I prefer to shoot film. The detail, crispness, and color range that I get with my film cameras, I carry four, is much superior that every digital camera I have tried.

P.S. about spammers I am not as nice as you, I want to remove their fingers.

I still remember everything you’ve told me about this. You have proven it not only in this sample, and I’m still agree with you. ..but not to eat the Sago worm as you did in Sarawak :-)
